This does not necessarily mean they will always behave exactly this way.<\/p><p data-start=\"812\" data-end=\"1032\">At first, a dog may feel overwhelmed, inhibited or simply be busy observing their new environment. As they begin to feel safe, they may gain confidence, explore more and express their emotions and behaviours more freely.<\/p><p data-start=\"1034\" data-end=\"1069\">You may therefore gradually notice:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1071\" data-end=\"1359\"><li data-section-id=\"xxg5d9\" data-start=\"1071\" data-end=\"1099\">more energy or excitement;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"nfp2kk\" data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1125\">more playful behaviour;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"qy79gc\" data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1161\">increased requests for attention;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"12ghe65\" data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1201\">fears that were not obvious at first;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1cgmk6h\" data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1212\">barking;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"15kv147\" data-start=\"1213\" data-end=\"1241\">difficulties during walks;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1folg9k\" data-start=\"1242\" data-end=\"1308\">reactivity towards certain dogs, people, vehicles or situations;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1ih9x18\" data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1359\">behaviours linked to frustration or adolescence.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"1361\" data-end=\"1494\">This does not necessarily mean that the dog is \u201cbecoming difficult\u201d. They may simply be starting to show more of who they really are.<\/p><p data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1852\"><strong data-start=\"1496\" data-end=\"1852\">Every dog develops at their own pace: a few days for some, several weeks or several months for others. For some dogs, especially when they have had a difficult past or when many things are new to them, it may take a year or sometimes even longer before they fully find their bearings. Be patient: adapting to a new life is a process that can take time.<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0367f81 tempting to immediately introduce your dog to their entire new life: long walks, the city, restaurants, public transport, visits to friends, meetings with lots of dogs\u2026<\/p><p data-start=\"2067\" data-end=\"2176\">For a newly adopted dog, this can represent an enormous amount of information in a very short period of time.<\/p><p data-start=\"2178\" data-end=\"2243\">During the first few weeks, it is generally better to prioritise:<\/p><ul data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2469\"><li data-section-id=\"1jwo7cq\" data-start=\"2245\" data-end=\"2280\">a relatively predictable routine;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1wwb5jm\" data-start=\"2281\" data-end=\"2294\">calm walks;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"dojbdl\" data-start=\"2295\" data-end=\"2319\">enough sleep and rest;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"hb8srr\" data-start=\"2320\" data-end=\"2370\">environments in which the dog feels comfortable;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1h965os\" data-start=\"2371\" data-end=\"2404\">short and positive experiences;<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1lreuzg\" data-start=\"2405\" data-end=\"2469\">the opportunity to observe from a distance before approaching.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2471\" data-end=\"2581\">They will have their whole life to discover the world. There is no need to show them everything straight away.<\/p><h2 data-section-id=\"167h85o\" data-start=\"2583\" data-end=\"2617\">Never force a dog who is afraid<\/h2><p data-start=\"2619\" data-end=\"2734\">If your dog hesitates, stops, backs away or tries to move away from a situation, take this communication seriously.<\/p><p data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2877\">Avoid pulling them with the leash, physically pushing them or forcing them to approach \u201cso they understand there is nothing to be afraid of\u201d.<\/p><p data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"2941\">An experience that is too intense can actually reinforce fear.<\/p><p data-start=\"2943\" data-end=\"2958\">Instead, think:<\/p><p data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"3010\"><strong data-start=\"2960\" data-end=\"3010\">Distance \u2192 observation \u2192 safety \u2192 progression.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3012\" data-end=\"3170\">Stay far enough away from whatever worries your dog so that they are still able to observe, think, sniff, possibly take a treat and remain relatively relaxed.<\/p><p data-start=\"3172\" data-end=\"3270\">Progress should follow <strong data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3223\">your dog\u2019s learning pace<\/strong>, not the pace we would like to impose on them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element them to \u201cput up with\u201d the situation.<\/p><p data-start=\"3403\" data-end=\"3486\">Whenever possible, we want them to associate it with a neutral or positive emotion.<\/p><p
